When the game is on the line Emily Clay is the girl the Woodland Lady Wildcats want on the rubber.

Clay, a senior pitcher, has been the anchor of Coach Colman Roberts’s rotation all season long.

“She is a girl that throws hard, but she a lot of other pitches too,” said Roberts, “When she is on her game and hitting her spots she is very effective.”

Clay — a four year starter for Woodland — was the catalyst to Woodland’s 9-0 start, and a major player in Woodland’s Model Lady Devil’s Classic tournament victory. The 5-foot-10 righty threw three shutouts in the tournament and was named most valuable player.

The rest of her season has been marked by a number of stellar performances on the mound. On Aug. 19, she tossed a seven inning complete game against reigning region champs Northwest Whitfield. Clay’s next time out she threw four shutout innings while striking out 6 and allowing only one hit a 12-0 victory over Rome.

The standout pitcher spent her summer playing travel ball for the 18-and-under East Cobb Bullets. Her efforts on the mound at Woodland and East Cobb have earned her a scholarship to pitch at Georgia State University next season.
